ECPS prepares students for middle school adjustments

TARBORO — Making a move from elementary to middle school is not easy for students.  West Edgecombe and Phillips Middle Schools capitalized on this fact, hosting sessions to help their students become prepared for middle school life.

West Edgecombe Middle School sponsored a sixth grade orientation where nearly half of the student body attended. The students participated in a general information session and a tour of the school, while the staff led teambuilding activities. Principal Donita Gregory facilitated sessions regarding student achievement, daily operations, dress code, safety, and discipline.

“Transitioning to middle school is a major move for 6th grade students and we are going to make the transition as smooth as possible,” says Principal Gregory. “I am excited to get to know all of my students and build relationships with them, staff, parents, and the community.”

Phillips Middle School held a weeklong ‘Bulldog Academy’ to orient students to the campus.  Focusing on heroes as the theme, the rising sixth graders chose researched past and present heroes while creating video presentations to showcase their learning.

“The kids were having fun and that’s what we wanted,” said Principal Lisa Howell. “They’re sort of nervous so we wanted this to be a positive experience.”

To make sure this happened, Phillips Middle School students participated in physical activity and line dances led by Director of Child Nutrition Ruth McDowell. “Now you all see that living a healthy life can be fun,” exclaimed McDowell.
