“The world out there starts here.”
That’s Edgecombe Community College (ECC)’s motto and the goal of a job fair set to run from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Friday in the Mobley Atrium of the Thomas S. Fleming Building on ECC’s Tarboro campus.
“The goal is to hire potential employees on this day,” said Marie Wilson, career counselor/ recruiter for ECC. “We’ve never had so many employers come out. I think that will give people hope that there are jobs out there.”
Twenty-six employers from the area have confirmed their participation in the fair. Among them are six employers in the healthcare field and several temporary job placement (staffing) agencies. The majority of the employers are from Edgecombe or Nash County.
“There are so many people in this community who have lost their job and they’ve gone back to school to get some more training or to go ahead and get themselves a diploma or degree,” Wilson said. “Our goal (at ECC) is to train them and for them to find employment once they leave us.”
Edgecombe County’s unemployment rate was 15 percent in December 2012, much higher than North Carolina’s rate of 9.5 percent and the fifth highest in the state, according to statistics released by the North Carolina Department of Commerce Division of Employment Security. December marked the 55th month in a row that Edgecombe’s unemployment rate was in the double digits. The state’s department of commerce will have a representative at Friday’s job fair.
The Daily Southerner is a co-sponsor of this year’s job fair.
“We’re a co-sponsor because we believe it’s vital we keep talented prospects at home to help grow our local and regional economy,” said John H. Walker, editor/ publisher of The Daily Southerner.
ECC will have human resources staff on hand at the job fair to do resume critiques for attendees.
“Folks need to bring a resume and dress for success,” Wilson said.
The first job fair at ECC was held in 2008 and it has grown ever since, according to Wilson. Several employers participate every year, including Holden Temporaries Inc., a Tarboro-based temporary staffing company, and The Action Group, a human resources solutions company.
