Daughtridge keynote speaker for ECC graduation Saturday

TARBORO — “The world out there starts here” is Edgecombe Community College (ECC)’s motto, and for hundreds of students, the “world out there” begins Saturday at spring graduation.

ECC’s 44th spring commencement will begin at 10 a.m. in the Keihin Auditorium on the Tarboro campus.

ECC will award 470 associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Also, 120 adult high school diplomas and GEDs will be awarded. College officials expect a capacity crowd.

“We’ve got almost 100 health sciences (graduates),” said Mary Tom Bass, director of public information for ECC. “That’s our most popular division.”

The program with the second largest number of graduates is early childhood education, with 46 graduates. Forty-four students will receive an Associate in Arts, a college transfer degree offering general college courses.

ECC ensures that students are ready to enter the workforce by offering Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) testing. In April the college received the ACT Career Preparedness Award in North Carolina.

The presentation of three student awards, along with one staff and one faculty award, will be highlights of Saturday’s commencement

Rocky Mount native Bill Daughtridge Jr., North Carolina Secretary of Administration, will give the keynote address. Daughtridge serves as secretary for the North Carolina Department of Administration, often referred to as the “business manager” of state government. He is president of Daughtridge Gas & Oil Company, a Rocky Mount-based fuel oil company his grandfather began in 1929.

A three-term member of the NC House of Representatives, Daughtridge served on the Education and Education Subcommittee on Universities. He was appointed Commerce Chairman and Small Business and Entrepreneurship Vice Chair, and his assignments included Joint Select Committee UNC Board of Governors and Economic Growth Development Co-Chair. He currently sits on the UNC Board of Governors, where he chairs the Governance Committee.

Daughtridge attended UNC-Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and received the IFC Outstanding Senior Award. He also received his MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill, where he was Student Association Vice President of Finance.

An Eagle Scout, Daughtridge served as president of Boy Scouts of America’s NC and VA area and currently serves as Boy Scouts of America Vice President of Marketing for the Southern Region.

He has served as first vice president of the UNC General Alumni Association, UNC Lineberger Cancer Center Board of Visitors, and as a member of the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Visitors.
