TARBORO — The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Department arrested a 24-year old Tarboro man after he fired shots at two males in his front yard and struck two occupied residences nearby.

Deputies responded to Lakeside Trailer Park last Saturday afternoon about a verbal altercation amongst several males in a front yard. When deputies arrived, two of the suspects had left the area in a white Buick.

Later that night, law enforcement received a call around 11:50 p.m. that the same two males had come back to the residence and were once again causing trouble.

As the suspects exited the vehicle, Melvin Ray Jones, of 137 Specklebird Lane, Tarboro, began firing shots at them. The gunshots missed them and struck two occupied residences nearby.

Upon questioning, the victims were able to identify Jones as the alleged gunman.

Jones was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill and two counts of discharging a firearm into occupied property. He was placed in the Edgecombe County Detention Center under a $15,000 secured bond.
