Chamber award ceremony postponed

TARBORO — An annual event originally scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today has been postponed. The Tarboro Edgecombe Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors made the decision to postpone the 80th anniversary annual meeting and distinguished service awards banquet to a later date at a retreat about a week and a half ago, according to Jimmie Hughes, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors.

“Some of the (award) nominees had some conflicts, so we decided to postpone it,” Hughes said. The board will meet soon to decide on a new date and time.

“When we get a [new] date set, we’ll have to work with them and see if they can accommodate us on that date,” Hughes said.

Dr. Deborah Lamm, president of ECC and ongoing Chamber board member, said she looks forward to the awards banquet because it provides an opportunity to recognize “unsung heroes” in the community. The awards that will be presented at the ceremony are Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel of the year, firefighter of the year, law enforcement officer of the year, young educator of the year and distinguished service award.

Nominees for the EMS, firefighter and law enforcement awards came from department chiefs in the community, while the young educator — a teacher with less than three years’ experience — is nominated by school administration officials. A committee of community members is selecting the DSA recipient.

Chamber President Bobbie Martin explained this is the first year for the chamber to present a distinguished service award.

From 1985 until 2010, the chamber selected a “Citizen of the Year” from community nominations. In 2011, there was no annual meeting, and in 2012, the chamber honored its small and large businesses of the year.

Hailey Best, Miss North Carolina 2011, was the scheduled keynote speaker, and Hughes said she is willing to speak at the postponed awards ceremony.

“We’re working to make that happen,” he said.
