Christmas babies liven hospital nursery

TARBORO — Two babies were born on Christmas at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital this year.

Ja’Mia Dickens entered the world at 8:44 a.m. Tuesday, while Allyson Sharpe was born at 1:03 p.m.

Hospital spokesperson Erin Grimsley said the birth of any baby is exciting, but especially so when it happens not once, but twice, on a day such as Christmas.

Ja’Mia, the daughter of Teirra Morris of Rocky Mount, weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces. She has a 2-year-old brother, Jamarion

“I was kind of surprised because I didn’t think she was going to be born on Christmas. She was supposed to be born on the 22nd, but I held off until Christmas,” said Morris. “I feel special because I feel like she’s a gift – God’s gift that He gave to me.”

For Ja’Mia’s first Christmas, she received Mickey Mouse toys, newborn outfits and Pampers from her mother, and a special present at the hospital.

“One of the volunteers at the hospital made her a red hat and a blanket,” Morris said.

Ja’Mia’s birth means double the presents next Christmas; Morris plans to get her daughter a separate gift for her birthday and Christmas.

Allyson is Davina Sharpe’s first child and weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces.

“She was born two weeks early. I was supposed to be induced on Jan. 7. It was a surprise,” Sharpe said. “She was beautiful. I cried when I first heard her cry.”

Sharpe recalled the hospital staff telling her, “That’s the best gift you can get on Christmas.” She thought so, too.

Sharpe had a difficult labor and had to have a Caesarean section but hasn’t had any problems since her daughter’s delivery. She came home from the hospital with Allyson on Thursday, with a basket of fruit and a knitted red hat set for her newborn daughter. Allyson isn’t the only family member with a December birthday.

“My birthday was last week, on the 18th,” Sharpe said. She has a twin brother, David Sharpe, with the same birthday, and a cousin and an uncle with December birthdays. She knows the feeling of being “cheated” on Christmas gifts because her birthday is a week before the holiday.

“I think I’m actually going to celebrate her [Allyson’s] birthday early, so she can get more gifts,” Sharpe said.
