Princeville Police treats kids with gifts

PRINCEVILLE — Bethaney Hickory was disappointed after she found out that her son, Malsyere Phillips, 8, was not eligible for the Tarboro Police Department Shop with a Cop program. The program selected kids who lived in Tarboro and officers took the children shopping for Christmas items at Wal-Mart.

Phillips disappointment led her to question her hometown cop, Princeville Police Chief Joey Pettway, as to why his department did not participate.

Phillips quest came a little too late for the Shop With ta Cop program, however, Pettway came up with a solution.

Princeville’s top cop solicited sufficient funds to take 10 children shopping at Wal-Mart Wednesday. Petway’s program went one step farther by taking the children shopping in a limousine, courtesy of Hunter-Odom Funeral Home of Rocky Mount.

“The kids eyes lit up when they realized they were going to Wal-Mart in a limousine,” Petway said. “Thanks to Hemby-Willoughby Mourtary, Dickens Funeral Home, Wal-Mart, and Simms we were able to give the selected children in Princeville a better Christmas that may not have been afforded them.

Shaneerah White is a single mother of twins who works two jobs. Buying what the twins have on their Christmas list is hard.

“I work hard every day to supply the needs for my children,” she said. “It’s hard around Christmas time to get everything that they want. I’m thankful that Princeville Police Department helped us have a better Christmas.”

Kenisha Knight is also a single parent.

“We can’t do it all,” she said. “It means a lot that they helped us.”

Saddia Lee, Princeville assistant financial officer, assisted with the shopping. Lee appeared to be as happy as the children who were shopping.

“It’s all about the children,” she said. “As long as they are happy, we have done the right thing.”

Petway said when he found out about the Shop With a Cop program, it was too late for his department to apply. Next year he plan on applying for the grant

And remember Malsyere? He purchased two DSi games.
