Edgecombe man convicted of second-degree murder

TARBORO — A 20-year old Edgecombe County man was convicted of a lesser charge of second-degree murder after he was originally charged with first-degree murder for gunning down a 17-year-old in 2010.

Ladarrius Tavon Hatcher, was convicted in Edgecombe County Superior Court of killing Murray Deshawn Chamberlain on Nov. 30, 2010.

Officers found Chamberlain behind a residence on Long Avenue suffering from  multiple gunshot wounds.

Hatcher fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, but later turned himself in at the magistrate's office. Investigators obtained warrants for first-degree murder, but, after consulting with the district attorney's office, the charges were downgraded to involuntary manslaughter.

The district attorney's office said Hatcher testified he shot Chamberlain, but it was an accident.

Rocky Mount Police Cpl. Mike Lewis said it was a difficult investigation.

Hatcher had prior convictions in 2009 for resisting a public officer and disorderly conduct and in 2010 for another conviction for disorderly conduct. He received probation in both cases.
