Art camps this summer will get children’s creativity flowing.
Edgecombe County Cultural Arts Council is offering several camps for children ages 3 to 12. Art teachers for the camps include Ashley Myers, Genevieve Govoni and Taylor Owens, as well as guest artists.
“It will be a chance for them to create and explore different mediums that they might not be exposed to in school,” said Joyce Turner, executive director of Edgecombe Arts. “Each camp will more or less be themed.”
“Art Adventures” will focus on multicultural art, “Creative Spark Camp Week” will expose children to “little bits of different types of art,” and “Art That Tells a Story” will center on the artists from “award-winning storybooks,” said Turner. The arts council director recalls looking at the storybook illustrations as a child and seeing the words “coming to life through the pictures.”
“Some of the characters, like from Dr. Seuss, they stay with you even as an adult,” she said.
The following is a list of the art camps:
The first week of camp, Little Artists Camp, will run from June 17-21, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. each day for kids ages 3 to 5 years. Tuition is $30 for Arts Council members and $40 for non-members. Each day the little artists will create a variety of artwork.
The second week will be Art Adventures Camp, June 24-28, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. daily for kids ages 6 to 10 years. Tuition is $45 for Arts Council members and $55 for non-members.
The third week will be Art That Tells A Story Camp, July 15 -19, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for kids ages 6 to 10 years. Tuition is $45 for Arts Council members and $55 for non-members.
The final week of art camp will be Creative Spark Week Camp, July 22 -26, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for kids ages 6 to 12 years. Tuition is $55 for Arts Council members and $65 for non-members.
In addition to the art camps, Edgecombe Arts will once again offer Manners Camp with instructor, Haffye Cox, who will teach the children “the lost art of good Southern etiquette,” with “age appropriate lessons,” said Turner. At the end of the week, the students will host a reception for family members.
The Manners Camp will be offered the week of July 8-12, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. daily for children ages 7 to 10 years. Tuition is $50 for Arts Council members and $60 for non-members.
All of the art camps will take place at North East Carolina Prep School at 274 Husky Trail in Tarboro. The Manners Camp will take place in the Memorial Hall at Calvary Church in Tarboro.
Arts Council members receive a discount for all camps. Families with two or more children attending camp will also receive a discount.
“It’s affordable prices,” Turner said. “We are also offering a limited number of scholarships for all the camps.”
