Holiday show to benefit 4-H

SCOTLAND NECK — A “Simply Shopping…Have a Holly Jolly Christmas” event today from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the East Carolina Agriculture and Education Center will benefit Edgecombe County 4-H.

“This is our 13th year and it keeps growing,” said Lesa Walton, 4-H youth development extension agent for Edgecombe County. “We just want to encourage folks to come out and shop with us and support our local vendors…Kick off your holiday shopping if you haven’t already and get in the holiday spirit.”

As Walton pointed out, today is a holiday (Veterans’ Day), offering a perfect opportunity for people off work for the day to drop by the show. Eighteen vendors will offer up a variety of holiday gifts to customers. Jewelry, women’s scarves, bath and spa items, Pampered Chef items, clothing and fashion, and food items will be among the offerings at the show.

“It’s just a mixture…things that appeal to ladies’ shopping,” Walton said. “We’ve got local artists who do paints on canvas. We’ve got a gentleman coming who bakes his own cheese straws. There’s another lady coming who does monogrammed initials out of wood.”

At the show, Walton said the 4-Her’s also will take orders for live Fraser fir wreaths to be delivered during the holidays as an additional fundraiser.

The Edgecombe County 4-Her’s are young people ages 5 to 19 from all parts of Edgecombe County. The proceeds from the show will help support the 4-Her’s service learning projects and life skill development.

“Their motto is to make the best better,” Walton said. “They’re trying to improve themselves and make themselves the best individual they can be, working to become well-rounded young men and women.”

The entry fee for the holiday shopping event is $1 or a canned good to support slightly-worn shoes for the “4-H Sole to Soul” community service project.

To get to the agriculture center, take exit 478 from U.S. Highway 64. The center is at 1175 Kingsboro Road.
