Jobless rate plays a familiar tune

Numbers fall, but still in double digits

TARBORO — For Edgecombe County, it’s the same song, 62nd verse when the tune is about finding a job.

For the 62nd consecutive month, Edgecombe County’s unemployment rate is in double digits — although down two points to 13 percent for August 2013. County-by-county statistics were released Tuesday by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Division of Employment Security.

In August, Edgecombe was among 98 counties statewide that showed a drop in unemployment while one increased and one stayed the same.

Despite the drop, the results leave the county in familiar territory — being one of the most difficult in the state for a job seeker to find work.

In August, Edgecombe ranked No. 99 and Scotland County, at 15.2 percent, ranked No. 100, while the lowest rate in the state was in Currituck County at 4.1 percent.

August broke a string of three consecutive months for the unemployment rate to increase.

Statistics show the August labor force included 23,561 persons — down 1,072 from July — with 3,062 persons out-of-work. That number is down 571 from July.

The June not seasonally adjusted rate for the entire state was 9.1 percent.

Among area counties, Pitt had the lowest rate at 9.7 percent (No. 56), followed by Martin at 10.8 (No. 79), Nash at 12.7 (No. 93), Wilson at 13.1 (No. 95) and Halifax at 13.3 (No. 97).

Rocky Mount had the highest rate among SMAs at 12.0

The number of workers employed statewide (not seasonally adjusted) decreased in August  by 19,577 to 4,300,113 while those unemployed decreased 44,354  to 388, 448. Since  August 2012, the number of workers employed statewide increased 41, 105 while those unemployed decreased 69,993.
