Hilma rezoning before town council Tuesday

TARBORO — A public hearing on the rezoning of the former Hilma Country Club golf course is one of the items on a relatively brief agenda facing the Tarboro Town Council when it meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers. The meeting was rescheduled because of the Monday observance of Veterans Day.

The rezoning of the property, located on the northeastern corner of the intersection of West Wilson and Western Boulevard, would allow for business development if council follows the recommendation of the planning and zoning board.

The property is currently zoned O&I (office and institutional) and R-12 (single family residential). The change requested by property owner Charles Ainsley would rezone it as B-3 — general commercial district.

In addition, there are two other public hearings scheduled — to notify the citizens that the town will apply for a Small Cities Community Development Block Grant in the amount of $500,000 to allow for repairs and improvements to homes owned by elderly and low-income citizens as well as notifying the citizens that the town will apply for a $50,000 Talent Enhancement Capacity Building Grant. This grant will provide funds for tuition, travel and wages for staff members to participate in a program at East Carolina University.

Two items are on the consent agenda include adjustments to the 2011 tax levy as well as adjustments to the 2012 tax levy.

The are four items on the action agenda:

• the charge off of uncollectible personal taxes from the 2002 tax levy

• a budget amendment for insurance claims reimbursed

• appointments for Ward 6 to the planning board and zoning commission and the citizens advisory recreation committee

• appointments to consider in December, specifically to the historic district commission.

The council will also hear reports from department heads.
