NECP holding ribbon cutting Thurs.

TARBORO — North East Carolina Prep School (NECP) public charter school will be holding a ribbon cutting at its newly renovated facility Thursday and the community is invited. The ceremony will get under way at 4 p.m. at 274 Husky Trail — a new address for the former Mary Frances Center on Howard Avenue Extended.

At the gathering, Mayor Donald Morris will issue at official welcome from the town, followed by remarks by NECP Executive Director John Westberg.

Following brief performances from the school band, flute ensemble and chorus, tours of the facility will be conducted.

Welcome from Tarboro Mayor Donald Morris

Classes for the second semester got under way at the facility on Monday and work is expected to begin shortly on the construction of a new, two-story building.

The cost of the entire project is about $12 million and, when completed, will accommodate the school’s project enrollment of 2,200 students.

The school currently houses slightly more than 400 students in grades K-8. The school will add its first high school class, the ninth grade, when it opens for its second year of operation in August.

NECP was one of nine applicants approved for fast track status last March, enabling officials to open for class on August 1.

NECP is a public charter school, meaning there is no tuition. The school is open to all students in Edgecombe and surrounding counties. Because of class size limitations established by the state, admissions are restricted to space available. Students not immediately accepted are placed on a waiting list.
