PRINCEVILLE — Fleming Landscaping completed the demolition of an eyesore Tuesday that stained the appearance of Main Street for several years.
Edgecombe County gave Fleming the order to demolish the structure under the county's building code ordinance.
Mayor Bobbie Jones marveled over the vacant lot.
"Our plan to make Princeville great again is falling in place," he said. "One of our goals is to beautify the town. That building was an eyesore, Now that lot is beautiful.
"I hope that we can put something up there that will bring some jobs to Princeville."
The building was constructed by a Durham doctor after the 1999 flood for the purpose of operating a clinic. Political red tape completely derailed the proposed operation, and the clinic never came to fruition.
If the clinic had opened, the site could have added a little glamour to that section of town — a senior citizen building sits adjacent to the lot and across the street is town hall.
The construction of the structure entailed joining several single wide trailers and then covering them with aluminum siding. Several years after the building was constructed, it slowly began showing signs of deteriorating.
