Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS) has received 181 applications for its proposed K-8 global school, Martin Millennium Academy, (MMA). Open enrollment began Jan. 15, and the school system received 101 applications within the first 24 hours.
“I couldn't be more pleased,” Superintendent John Farrelly said. “What a fantastic start to our admission process with that number of students enrolled in less than 24 hours of open enrollment.”
Open enrollment will continue until March 15. The school board will vote on opening MMA and the subsequent reconfiguration of Pattillo and Stocks Elementary Schools at either its March or April business meeting, depending on the registration process. The proposition is to convert Stocks from a K-3 school to a K-5 school and Pattillo from a 4-6 school to a 6-8 school.
.Each grade level at MMA will have a maximum of 60 students, for a total of 540 students in the school.
“We may consider expanding in the second year,” Farrelly said. “We have additional classes (at Martin) but need those upfront for enrichment classes, Exceptional Children classes, etc.”
