Tarboro Mayor Pro Tem Taro Knight is seriously considering running for North Carolina House District 23 seat currently held by Rep. Joe Tolson. Tolson, 63, is a retired educator from Pinetops who is serving his 17th year as District 23 representative as a Democrat.
Tolson said during a telephone interview with The Daily Southerner that he will not seek re election.
Both are Democrats and Knight said he would not run if Tolson seeks re-election.
"I do believe that the time is right and with enough good people around me, we can make this happen," Knight said. "I'm 98 percent sure that I will enter the race.
"However, I will have a conversation with a man who I believe will also be a good candidate for District 23 seat. He and I have similar views. He and I will sit down and figure out how we will go forward because neither one of us want to run against each other. Sometimes having too many people in the primary race weakens the field and allows someone else to win who may not represent the interest that we believe in. I'll know something by February."
