Edgecombe woman convicted in Pitt County

TARBORO — A Edgecombe County woman pleaded guilty to misdemeanor death by a motor vehicle in Pitt County court on Thursday for the death of a six-year old flower girl on the day of the her friends wedding.

Mupin Cummings, 39, of Pinetops, will not spend anytime in jail for the conviction, but she will serve 18 months on supervised probation. She will also lose her North Carolina driver's license for a year.

The accident happened back in April, when the Jeep Cherokee Cummings was driving crossed the center line and hit an on coming vehicle. Ava Kendall, daughter of Dr. James Kendall, who works at the Tarboro Women's Center, was on her way to a friends wedding and was going to be a flower girl, was killed in the crash when her friends Honda Accord was hit head on. The accident happened on Highway 43 in Pitt County.

Cummings' lawyer spoke for her in court, because she doesn't speak fluent english. The lawyer stated that Cummings will live with this for the rest of her life and she is unable to forgive herself.
