Black Friday busy in Tarboro

TARBORO — There weren’t any riots … no fights and, thankfully, no shootings as in South Georgia, but Black Friday arrived just the same in Tarboro and shoppers took advantage of the opportunity to save money whenever possible.

Traffic was heavy at Marrow-Pitt Ace Hardware as well as the town’s two big box stores — Lowe’s Home Improvement and Walmart.

At Marrow-Pitt, there was a constant stream of shoppers coming to pick out a live Christmas tree, then watch Mears Pitt grab his electric saw and trim the bottom.

“We haven’t always had a live tree,” one couple said as they watched Pitt fasten a tree stand to the trunk of the tree.

“We decided we wanted to do it this year,” the wife added.

While they waited for the tree to be finished, their children were busy shopping in the “Fawn Shop,” where youngsters can pick out presents for their parents and have them wrapped away from home, thus preserving the secrecy of the gift.

“We just got that set up this morning,” explained Bernice Pitt. She said her grandchildren would finish decorating the shop and then take on the role of wrapping the gifts as the day wore on.

Inside the store, there were lines at both sides of the registers as shoppers cashed in on bargains listed in a Wednesday circular that appeared in The Daily Southerner.

Shoppers were also looking to grab items they had seen in both the Lowe’s and Walmart circulars, which were also included in the newspaper.

Traffic was also steady at other merchants in town, including Henderson Lumber Co, Rex Jewelers, Simmons Furniture, Brewer’s Jewelry and Video TV & Appliance.

While Black Friday turned into Cyber Monday at midnight, some local businesses — such as Mayo Knitting Mill — are extending the opportunity for shoppers.

Mayo is opening its outlet store to the public from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. today through Thursday and continuing through Dec. 20. The outlet will close for lunch from 11:30 a.m. until noon daily.
