Pinetops pair charged with US Cellular break-in

TARBORO — The Pinetops Police Department made two arrests Friday night and charged the pair with three felonies for allegedly breaking into the US Cellular store at 206 W. Hamlet St. and stealing an undetermined amount of cash.

Capt. S. Harrell said shortly before 9 p.m. on New Year's Day that 33-year-old Kenneth Ray Whitley and 24-year-old Leslie Dawn Batts allegedly broke into the store and stole the money after they used a key to enter the building and entered the code to deactivate the alarm prior to stealing the cash.

Harrell didn't confirm if either of the suspects were employed by the store.

According to Harrell, police received numerous tips from the community and as the investigation continued, Whitley and Batts' name continued to come up during the phone calls from tipsters.

Friday night, police charged Whitley with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and felony conspiracy. He was placed in the Edgecombe County Detention center under a $10,000 secured bond. According the N.C. Courts website, Whitley is due in court Wednesday for his first appearance on the charges.
