Rocky Mount man charged with attempted murder

TARBORO — A convicted felon from Rocky Mount faces a slew of charges to add to his already lengthy rap sheet after he allegedly shot another man Nov. 27 in Pinetops.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office responded to a call on Bynum Farm Road, where they found Devontae Pitt with a gunshot wound to the arm.

According to a press release from the sheriff's office, the shooter had already left the scene. After questioning Pitt, deputies learned that 22-year-old Chamone Coy Diggins was the suspect.

Diggins was arrested 10 days later when he approached a license checkpoint that Tarboro police had set up.

Law enforcement charged Diggins, of 611 Paul St., Rocky Mount, with attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, discharge a weapon into occupied property, felony conspiracy, breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering.

After being booked in the Edgecombe County Detention Center, Diggins was allegedly found to be in possession of an electronic device and charged with inmate possessing tobacco/eletronics in jail. Diggins was jailed under a $301,500 secured bond.

Diggins is due in Edgecombe County District Court Jan. 2 to answer the charges. He also has four no operators license charges pending against him.

According to the N.C. Department of Corrections website, Diggins was just released from prison Oct. 12 after serving two years and 35 days after being convicted for possessing a weapon while he was incarcerated.

His troubles with law enforcement began in 2007 when he was 16 years old. Since then, Diggins has been convicted of breaking and entering eight times, larceny six times, common law imprisonment four times, escape from jail three times, possessing stolen goods, common law robbery, breaking out of a house and assault on a female.
