THE DAILY SOUTHERNER
An fatal crash early Friday morning on Webbs Chapel Road claimed the life of 38-year old Benjamin Randall Harris, Jr.
Harris had just left his residence at 4101 Webbs Chapel Road, when he was traveling west in foggy conditions. He ran off the right side of the road and hit a ditch and culvert, said North Carolina Highway Patrolman Tim Pope.
The impact of the crash forced the vehicle to overturn numerous times and ejected Harris from the vehicle. The vehicle came to rest on its roof.
After being ejected from the vehicle, Harris landed on a creek bank and slid into the creek's water face down. When deputies and EMS arrived on the scene they found him unresponsive in the water.
Pope said Harris was traveling at an estimated 55 miles per hour when the accident happened.
A resident who lives in front of the crash site contacted emergency personnel and told them about the accident.
Harris' death was the first vehicle-related fatality in Edgecombe County this year.
