BOE to meet in Keihin Auditorium Monday

TARBORO — The Edgecombe County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly business meeting in Edgecombe Community College’s Keihin Auditorium at 6 p.m. Monday. The venue is a departure from the board’s usual Edgecombe County Public Schools central office meeting location.

The Keihin Auditorium venue will accommodate the presentation of Gold Key Awards to students from schools throughout the district. The awards are presented to students periodically for various types of achievements.

Prior to the Gold Key Award presentation and other recognitions, the board will hear three items for information: a global school presentation, the district’s focus school of the month – Phillips Middle School, and a couple of field trips.

ECPS’ three-year strategic plan is one of the action items up for board approval at the meeting. The plan identifies five core values: community, relationships, safe schools, continuous improvement and rigorous curriculum/ instruction. Each of the values has belief statements that support the identified educational value.

The plan will guide the system’s direction and is aligned with the “vision and mission of the District, the goals of the North Carolina State Board of Education and the needs of students in Edgecombe County.” The work represents six months of collaboration by stakeholders across the district.

Other action items up for board approval are as follows:

The purchase of 3,000 Samsung Chromebooks to be used by students as part of the district’s digital learning initiative for classrooms of core teachers in grades three through 12. The total cost is $893,215.20.

Budget amendment 2013-2014

An addendum to the 2013-2014 ECPS traditional calendar. The addendum calls for a change in the graduation dates for North Edgecombe and SouthWest Edgecombe High Schools.

After voting on the action items, the board will move into closed session to discuss personnel, student management and legal issues. The board will then return to open session to vote on the approval of the closed session items.
