DeMuth's killer sentenced to serve 35-plus years

TARBORO — A high-speed chase that killed a North Carolina Highway Patrolman and former Edgecombe County Sheriff's deputy on Sept. 8, 2012 in Nash County went before a Superior Court judge Monday in Nashville.

The Williamston man who was responsible for killing Bobby "Gene" DeMuth, Jr.

will spend the next 35 years in prison after he pled guilty to second-degree murder.

During Monday's proceedings in Nash County Superior Court, 41-year-old Christopher McCoy Rodgers pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to serve between 21 and 26 years for the murder conviction.

Authorities said as DeMuth was deploying a strip of spikes onto the roadway on U.S. 64 near Spring Hope to slow Rodgers down, he swerved to avoid them and fatally struck DeMuth.

The chase started in Wake County after Rodgers' estranged girlfriend contacted 911 and told them he had tied her and her child up in the bathroom and stole her ATM bank card to obtain money, which he used to purchase crack cocaine.

After police were notified, they spotted Rodgers' vehicle and that's when the three county chase ensued that covered Wake, Franklin and Nash.

Rodgers was convicted in Wake County last week on two counts of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary and common law robbery. He was sentenced to 13.5 to 18.3 years for those convictions.
