Pesticide collection set for Wednesday

HOBGOOD — A free pesticide collection day sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS), in cooperation with the Edgecombe County Cooperative Extension, will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Wednesday  at the Edgecombe County Landfill, located at 1601 Colonial Rd.

Residents in Edgecombe, Nash, Wilson and surrounding counties.

The local site manager will be Tanya Heath , Agricultural Extension Agent for Edgecombe and  Nash Counties.

The program arranges collection of waste pesticides throughout the state with the goal of servicing every county at least once every two years.  In addition, pickups are made from almost 30 county-based Household Hazardous Wastes programs each year.  Also, through a grant from the NCDA&CS to Cooperative Extension Service (CES), many counties operate a Pesticide Container Recycling Program where farmers and licensed pesticide applicators can take properly rinsed pesticide containers for recycling. Disposal of pesticides and containers is not only regulated by the NC Pesticide Law of 1971 and its attending regulations, but all pesticide labels also contain specific directions for proper disposal.

Nearly all pesticide products will be accepted.  For liquid pesticide containers larger than 5 gal or for unlabeled pesticides, please contact the Cooperative Extension Office for information before bringing to the collection event.  No gas cylinders are accepted at the event; however, assistance information can be provided.  Contact the Heath at 641-7821 for more information.
