Tarboro Police detectives are investigating an alleged sexual assault that occurred between 8-10 p.m. on Sept. 20 behind the Church Street Apartments at the corner of Main and Church Streets.
The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5-feet-10-inches tall, with short, blonde hair and a medium build. He is possibly in his early-to-mid 20s.
The suspect may have been in the area over the past several weeks prior to the assault, according to reports.
In a Monday press release from the Tarboro Police Department (TPD), authorities said the assault was an isolated incident, but wanted to advise all residents to be aware of their surroundings.
The Daily Southerner has received information from numerous citizens who know the victim and said she told them she first saw the suspect on a bicycle when she went to the dumpster behind her apartment, but didn't think much about it.
Details about how the sexual assault happened are being withheld pending the ongoing investigation.
According to citizens, the victim didn't initially want to press charges, but since has opted to cooperate with detectives.
Numerous calls placed Monday and Tuesday to TPD Chief Damon Williams to confirm the information and comment went unanswered and had not been returned by press time.
Police have increased patrol efforts in downtown and have been canvassing the neighborhoods to locate the suspect or anyone who may have seen him around the time of the incident.
Persons with any information about the incident are asked to contact Det. Sgt. Bruce Edwards at 641-4201 or the non-emergency line at 641-4247.
Police are offering a reward leading to the arrest of the suspect.
