Pinetops police charged with murder

ELIZABETH CITY — A part-time Pinetops police officer has been charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of a fellow student.

Christopher David Amyx, 23, has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Jonathan Schipper of Havelock and fellow Mid-Atlantic Christian University student.

Amyx was charged late Wednesday for the Oct. 3 death and is being held without bond.

It is unclear if Amyx has an attorney.

Amyx worked two weekends a month with the Pinetops Police Department and was a full-time student at the college.

Pinetops Town Administrator Greg Bethea said that Amyx had been a reserve police officer for the town since May 1 and has "been dismissed in accordance with the standard practice and procedures of the Town of Pinetops Police Department" as a result of the first-degree murder charge.

Amyx typically worked two 12-hour shifts per month with the Pinetops Police Department, assisting permanent officers, added Bethea.

A memorial service will be held this evening at the college for Schipper.
