Several Edgecombe County cotton growers have been recognized for their outstanding yields in the 2012 crop season. The annual program recognizes top yield winners based on the acres of cotton grown and yields last season were the best ever. Total acreage in the county was 35,700 acres which was down considerably from the previous year.
The Division I (1 to 200 acres) winner was Ashley E. Taylor, Sr. and Ashley E. Taylor, Jr. who produced 1,552.4 pounds of cotton per acre on 12.9 acres. Their award was sponsored by Edgecombe Cotton Growers, Inc. Division II (201 to 700 acres) was won by Brad and Phil Bulluck who produced 1,138.15 pounds of cotton per acre on 558.0 acres. Division III (701 acres and up) was won by Rest-A-Bit Farms which produced 1,144.7 pounds of cotton on 1,835.6 acres. These two awards were sponsored by Pitt & Wilson County Gins.
Thirteen entries into the contest this year represented 9,576.6 acres and these growers averaged 1,081.4 pounds of lint per acre which exceeded the yield of 1,014 pounds of lint per acre in the 2009 contest when the county average yield was 913 pounds of lint per acre.
The awards had been previously announced at the Farm-City Breakfast at the Eastern Carolina Agriculture Center last month.
