Organic Commodities, Livestock Conference to be held

TARBORO — Persons interested in North Carolina’s rapidly growing organic agriculture sector will have the opportunity to connect with commercial-scale organic producers and organic commodity and livestock experts at the annual Organic Commodities & Livestock Conference. The conference is sponsored by the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association.

Registration deadline for the conference, which includes free on-farm workshops on Feb. 14 and the actual conference on Feb. 15, is Monday. Registration is $35 and there are two ways to register: online at or by phone at (919) 542-2402.

 The on-farm workshops will be held at Lindale Dairy, a certified organic dairy in Snow Camp and at Hocutt Farms, a certified organic vegetable farm in Sims.

Thor Oeschner, owner of Oeschner Farms in Newfield, N.Y. will keynote the conference, sharing stories about running his 300 acre farm, a mill, and a bakery.

The workshops, held at Nash County Community College, cover eight topics spread over four sessions.

Session I includes soil fertility testing for organic management, organic tobacco and starting and sustaining great wholesale relationships.

Session II includes organic grain and organic disease management, while Session III  includes a visual tour of Oeschner Farms and natural animal health and care. Session IV consists of a panel discussion on the topic “What is need to advance organic production in the Carolinas?”
