School board adopts no smoking plan

The Edgecombe County Board of Education approved a Tobacco Intervention Plan that will enforce a no-smoking policy for all of Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS).

Under the plan, students and staff will face consequences if they are found smoking.

“We have two plans, one for students and one for staff,” said Mary Williams, director of student support services.

The plan was presented to the board by Williams and Roland Whitted, associate superintendent for human resources.

No-smoking for ECPS will take effect on Aug. 1.

Williams said that the plan focuses on a health perspective and encourages violators to quit smoking rather than just punishing them.

Some of the consequences set for both students and staff that are seen smoking is being directed to a Web site that encourages smokers to quit and mandatory participation in tobacco education classes at Edgecombe County Health Department.

Other consequences for students may be participation in the STARS program, which focuses on the how smoking relates to health, notifying parents and four days of after-school detention.

Staff members that violate the policy may receive a written reprimand on their file also.

The type of consequence depends on how many times the smoker has violated the policy in a school year.

Measures are being taken to ensure that the plan will be included with other rules for ECPS.

“We will recommend changes to the Student Code of Conduct so everything is in line,” Williams said.

Steps are also being taken so that everyone affected by the changes will know about the policy.

Williams said that announcements will be made, banners will be put out and law enforcement will be informed.

Board member John Edmonson questioned if staff members will be punished if they walked off campus to smoke.

Williams said that those types of details are still being looked into but she gave her take on the question.
