Combs new mayor in Rocky Mount

Rocky Mount — Rocky Mount has a new mayor for the first time in 34 years, as David Combs defeated fellow Councilman Lamont Wiggins 5,790 to 4,894 votes Tuesday in the municipal election.

Longtime Mayor Fred Turnage did not seek another term.

Combs overcame a deficit of 2,463 to 344 in Edgecombe County to secure the win.

In Ward 1, incumbent Andre Knight won by 1,170 votes – 70 percent – over challengers Will Solomon Jr., Nellene Deloatch and Allen Mitchell.

Ward 4 incumbent Lois Watkins and former councilman Tom Looney may require a runoff. Watson had 576 and Looney 566 votes. Earl Hall received 88 votes.

Political newcomer Tom Rogers outdistanced Peter Klages and Ken Pledger with 1,449 votes to secure the Ward 5 seat on City Council. Klages had 432 votes and Pledger 209.

In Sharpsburg voters re-elected Sheila Williams mayor. Williams who will serve a third term, received 275 votes while challenger Debra Hamm had 237.
