Deputies arrest 13 in child support roundup

More than a dozen people from Edgecombe County were arrested over the weekend in a round-up that targeted parents who had not paid child support.

Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight said that deputies from the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Department conducted the child support round-up on Sunday as part of their program, "Let's Make Them Happy!"

"During this roundup, 13 people were arrested on active Child Support Order for Arrests from Edgecombe, Nash and Durham counties," said Knight.

Knight said that Sunday's roundup was the fourth such operation this year conducted by the Sheriff's Department.

Deputies arrested Benjamin Allen, Zendra Bailey, William E. Dickens, Milton Johnson, Matthew Leak and Rose Western, all of Tarboro; Shonell L. Higgs of Princeville; and Timothy M. Dancy, Kenneth R. Deans, Ronald L. Garrett, Antonio Johnson, Maurice W. Nicholson and Milton Taylor, all of Rocky Mount.

The suspects were taken to the Edgecombe County Detention Center and were placed under bonds that reflected the amount of child support that they currently owe.

Knight said that the roundups are aimed at dealing with the more than 3,800 cases of late or missing child support that Edgecombe County authorities deal with each year.

"I would like to thank the officers that participated in this round-up for a job well done," said Knight.
