Leak causes classroom ceiling collapse at NECP

TARBORO — Things aren’t yet back to normal, but are heading that way after a leak in North East Carolina Prep’s (NECP) elementary school building Wednesday set off fire alarms and caused the ceiling to collapse in two classrooms and damage two others in the first and second-grade wing.

“At about 11:30, a sprinkler head in the elementary building started leaking,” explained NECP spokesperson Diane Lefiles. “At first, we thought it was related to the weather.”

Lefiles said the fire alarm went off first, necessitating an exit from the building.

“The kids did great. Some were eating at that time and they got up, left their meals and went outside. The (emergency) drills really paid off.”

Lefiles said that at that time, no one knew why the alarms had sounded, but as personnel started investigating, the leak was discovered.
