Several thefts were reported in and around Tarboro during the week and the weekend of Christmas.

An N.C. 33 East resident called at 2:58 a.m. Thursday to report two of his rifles and a 2007 Honda Odyssey van stolen, with the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office responding to the call.

Sheriff's Capt. Al Moseley said by the time the victim called, their van, valued at $25,000 had been recovered in Pitt County near a boat-loading dock. Two rifles, a 12 gauge Remington shotgun and a .22 caliber Marlin rifle, also were taken from the resident's barn.

On Wednesday, there was damage and stolen items reported from the Town of Tarboro's property at the Indian Lake Sports Complex on Western Boulevard.

Patrolman Michael Trevathan responded to the call after it came in at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday. When he arrived, he said "it appeared that someone had thrown several bricks (through a) window in order to gain access" into the complex.

There were reportedly four full gallons of snow cone syrup, four partially full gallons of the syrup, 1,500 12 ounce paper cups, and 20 32 ounce bottles of Gatorade stolen from the concession building and the complex's press box. Though he did not have an estimate on the damage, Tarboro Parks and Recreation Athletic Director Warren Mitchell said it would cost well over $1,000 to fix.

Trevathan reported that, though one of the windows was damaged, a door had also been "left insecure" at the complex, when it was last known to be secure on Dec. 18.

On Sunday, Patrolman Charles Johnson responded to the 400 block of East Park Avenue at 10:12 a.m., after a homeowner reported almost $7,500 in jewelry had been taken from inside their residence.

The stolen jewelry included six rings, all together valued at $5,450, and a $2,000 silver bracelet. A construction crew had been working on the home before the theft was discovered, Johnson reported.

On Saturday, a television set was recovered for a Jeffreys Street resident after Sgt. Keith Morris and his K-9 Santos tracked the scent of the assailant. After the call was made about a breaking and entering at a residence on the 100 block of Jeffreys Street at 3:02 a.m., Morris arrived with the K-9 and performed the search.

The pair found a purple bath robe near the house, and then searched in the woods and found a cell phone and a television set, both covered with a brown jacket that the victim said did not belong to them.

The Jeffreys Street victim told police they did not want to pursue charges, because they knew the suspect and did not want to take time away from work to go to court.
