Murder trial set to begin
Father accused in death of infant son

T. J. ROYAL
Staff Writer

The trial of a parent charged with his infant son's murder last year is scheduled to begin Monday in Edgecombe County court.

Gregory Austin Bryant, 23, was charged last June with first-degree murder and felony child abuse in the death of his six-week-old son, Trenton Ryder Bryant.

The infant died April 8, 2007, with what Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight said were "three trauma spots to his head and three broken ribs. The doctor told us the cause of death was trauma to the head."

Gregory Bryant's attorney, Steven Fisher of Greenville, would not comment about the case Friday.

The infant's mother, Ashley Taylor Bryant, 21, also faces first-degree murder and felony child abuse charges. Her trial date is scheduled for Nov. 17. Her attorney is Terry Alford of Spring Hope.

The couple were charged in the case almost two months after their son died. Knight had said those charges were pending based on the pathologist's findings in the infant's death.

Gregory Bryant is being held in the Edgecombe County Detention Center without bond.

Ashley Bryant was released on $100,000 bond last October.
