SouthWest Edgecombe High School students got the opportunity to get their questions answered about government and how it effects them during Legislators in Schools Week.

State Rep. Joe P. Tolson, D-Edgecombe, addressed a group of civics students on Thursday about the importance of education and the impact government has on them.

Tolson encouraged them to take advantage of the opportunities that's being offered to them to build a good foundation for the future.

"Take the time to do what these instructors are telling you to do," Tolson said.

"A good education is the foundation for whatever you do in life."

Tolson received questions from students about 1:1 Laptop Initiative for Edgecombe County.

"We need this in our schools so you will have the best to compete in the world," Tolson said.

Tolson backed his claim by mentioning the evolving job market and how advanced students in other countries are.

"If we did anything less, we're selling you short," Tolson said.

Other international matters were brought up concerning their ability to relate to other cultures.

"Look very closely at the international process because no matter where you are or what you do, you're going to be dealing with other countries," Tolson said.

Tolson went into explaining his job as a representative highlighting what he does in sessions, passing and vetoing bills, generating a budget, work hours and salary.

The students were invited to get involved in politics by volunteering or becoming a page.

After explaining his role in government, students asked questions about how his job helps them.

A student asked about how much money the North Carolina Education Lottery is helping.
