The Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners have made their selections for Golden LEAF Community Assistance Initiative steering committee.
More than two weeks after Edgecombe County residents voted to use a steering committee to decide how to spend $2 million in Golden LEAF funds, the Board of Commissioners has chosen seven people to represent them on it.
They are: Rocky Mount farmer Tom Porter; North Carolina Association of Community Development Corporations Chief Executive Officer Sue Perry of Rocky Mount; Edgecombe County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon; Edgecombe Community College President Dr. Deborah Lamm; County Manager Lorenzo Carmon; and Edgecombe County Commissioners Wayne Hines and Calvin Anderson.
The selections will go for approval at Tuesday's 2 p.m. Board of Commissioners meeting, at the County Administration Building on Saint Andrew Street. The September Board of Commissioners meeting was moved up due to Labor Day.
Other business on the agenda includes:
• Approval of $1 million county financing for government capital items and renovations. Half the money would buy vehicles for the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office, and $450,000 would be spent on renovations to the County Administration Building, the Edgecombe County Courthouse and the Edgecombe County Memorial Library. The remaining $50,000 would be used to purchase property for an emergency services rescue squad building.
• Consideration of raising the connection fees for Water and Sewer District 5 from $200 to $500. If approved, the changes would be effective Oct. 15.
• A public hearing on rezoning 33 acres of agricultural property on Pleasant Hill Road, west of Green Pasture Road, owned by Robert Allen Proctor Jr. Proctor wants it rezoned so he can build a townhouse and duplex development on the property.
• Purchasing a two-acre tract of land on Seven Bridges Road for $25,000, for a rescue squad facility.
