Man charged with reckless driving during July Fourth

FROM STAFF REPORTS

A Winterville man was charged with reckless driving, after the North Carolina Highway Patrol said he wrecked his truck Saturday on N.C. 33 between Pinetops and Conetoe.

Michael Remick, 27, faces the reckless driving charge after he wrecked the 2005 Dodge truck he was driving around 7:42 a.m. Saturday, Trooper William Bullock said.

The trooper said speed was a factor, that Remick was driving around 75 mph on the road, which has a posted speed limit of 55 mph.

Bullock said Remick ran off the right side of the road after he said he "fell asleep" behind the wheel. The truck struck a ditch culvert, knocked over two mail boxes, and then Remick’s truck "rolled over several times" and came to rest on its roof, Bullock said.

The trooper said the accident happened three-quarters of a mile from the N.C. 33, N.C. 42 intersection.

Bullock said Remick had "several noticeable cuts on his arms and legs from the glass" shattered by the vehicle during the wreck.

The trooper said Remick was able to get out of the truck under his own power, and that the Edgecombe County Rescue Squad "put bandages on him" without taking him to a hospital.

Bullock added that Remick said he was returning to Winterville that morning after visiting a friend in Rocky Mount.
