Bertie man held in bloody beating

T. J. ROYAL
Staff Writer

A Bertie County man faces kidnapping and assault charges after police said he had an altercation with a woman on Barlow Road in Tarboro.

Roshon Marquis Holley, 23, of Roxobel was charged with one count each of first-degree kidnapping, a felony, as well as a misdemeanor count of assault inflicting serious injury.

Patrolman Ricky Mann said a call came in about an incident at an apartment complex on the 1600 block of Barlow Road at 4:21 a.m. Saturday. When he arrived, he said he saw a car at the No. 6 building blocked in by another.

After a woman told him about the incident, Mann said he confronted Holley and detained him in his police vehicle while he investigated the scene.

Mann said he found the victim, a black woman, standing outside an apartment with her left eye "extremely swollen" and her t-shirt "covered in blood."

According to the victim, Mann said the dispute started over a voice mail message that was left on her cell phone. When she refused to tell Holley who it was that called, they started arguing, with him pushing her and she in turn grabbing his hair, Mann reported.

Holley then allegedly "slammed her on the floor and began punching her," Mann said. The patrolman added that the victim said she was hit "at least three times."

When the victim attempted to flee, Mann said that Holley allegedly would not let her leave the apartment. When she did make her way out of the apartment and to a neighbor's door, Mann said that Holley allegedly pulled her back into the apartment.

The victim was later taken to Heritage Hospital and had to receive five stitches for a cut above her left eye, Mann said. He also said that it was recommended she see an eye doctor to find out if further damage was caused to her eye.

The patrolman said that photos taken at the scene show "large amounts of blood located through various rooms" at the apartment.

Holley was placed in the Edgecombe County Detention Center under a $100,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court today.
