SENIOR GAMES
Almost 300 seniors competing

Approximately 298 senior citizens from five counties have been in Tarboro this week competing in everything from Bocce and billiards to swimming and shuffleboard, at the 25th annual Down East Senior Games.

"We have had a great turnout," said Alberta Pettaway, town senior citizen coordinator.

Individuals had to be 55 years of age to participate. A cheerful determination dominated the countenances of most of the seniors active in the event, as they walked, threw, hit, pitched, swam and cast.

"I am participating in all the activities," panted Harry Ballard, 58, of Tarboro as he aimed a football toward a large round hole in a board.

Others were more laid back in their approach, as they gathered samples, and a variety of health-friendly materials, from more than 10 vendors present at the adjacent Health Expo.

Most of the events were held at the E.L. Robinson Center and the Tarboro High School stadium, although some events, such as swimming and racquetball, were at the Harrison Family YMCA in Rocky Mount.

Participating along with Edgecombe County were Nash, Halifax, Northampton and Wilson counties. The event was largely sponsored by the Upper Coastal Plain Area Agency on Aging and Interim Healthcare.

The games will continue through Friday. Those who receive awards are invited to attend the State Finals, which will be from Sept. 22-28 in Raleigh.
