Whitakers teen killed in wreck
Driver charged with DWI
A Whitakers teenager was killed in a head-on collision on Alternate U.S. 64 Saturday night.
According to N.C. State Highway Patrol reports, at approximately 10:53 p.m. Saturday, Derrick McCoy, 38, of Rocky Mount, was driving a 1999 Ford passenger car west on U.S. Alternate 64.
Approximately 1.8 miles outside of Tarboro, he crossed the center line and collided with a 1998 Toyota driven by Austin Jirodeau Rogers, 21, of Princeville, traveling east on the same road.
A passenger in Rodger's car, Courtney Dickens, 19, of Whitakers, was killed in the crash. She was not wearing a seat belt.
1st Sgt. Martin Jones said alcohol was a factor in the accident.
McCoy was charged with driving while impaired, driving left of center, driving with a revoked license and felony death by motor vehicle.
Both McCoy and Rogers were initially taken to Heritage Hospital in Tarboro. Rogers was then airlifted by EastCare helicopter, and McCoy was taken by ambulance to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Rogers was in serious condition and McCoy in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said this morning.
It is the second fatality this year in Edgecombe County. A woman was fatally injured on Feb. 14 while walking in early morning darkness, along N.C. 301, in the Bricks community.
