50th Anniversary

While attending East Carolina College, Josephine Ardelia Harper and Cecil Earl Long married Oct. 28, 1956, in the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville.

Dee’s parents were Joe John Sr., and Christine Lyde Smith Harper of Route 1, Whitakers. Cecil’s parents were Andrew Mayo and Mamie Modlin Long of Route 1, Jamesville.

On Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, their children who are Rita Ann Long Baker of Davidson, wife of John Steven Baker; Dr. Steven Brent Long of Raleigh, husband of Beth Marie Lamos of Gloucester, Va., and Stuart Bryan Long of Kuwait honored their parents with a golden wedding anniversary pig-pickin' celebration at their Tarboro home. Two hundred fifty-three relatives and friends were present.

Their grandchildren are Rebecca Winslow Baker of Chapel Hill, John Benjamin Baker and James Alexander Baker of Davidson; and Zachariah Andrew Long and Christine Beatrice Long of Raleigh.

A DVD family movie made from Dee and Cecil’s family pictures was given to each sibling or a deceased sibling’s ancestor, child and grandchild.

Dee’s siblings are Dr. Nancy Jane Vick of Farmville, Va., Christine Lyde Montgomery of Hershey, Pa., Doris Ray Hurst of Agat, Guam, Dr. Joe John Harper Jr. of Ripley, Tenn., Frank Spencer Harper of Whitakers and Elizabeth Snow Jones of Mebane.

Cecil’s living siblings are Fannie Gertrude Holliday of Goode, Va., Mamie C. Fisher of Nokesville, Va., and Maxine Milligan of Chesapeake, Va. His deceased siblings are Marie Watson formerly of Plymouth, Monnie Ellsworth Long (had no children), and Andrew Long formerly of Norfolk. Lillian Gurganus of Plymouth, oldest child of Marie Watson, received Marie’s DVD. Carolyn Reams of Washington, N.C., an older child of Andrew Long, received his DVD movie.
