ROCKY MOUNT — To the Editor:

One of the things I love most about returning home to my beloved Tarboro is escaping the grueling crush of northern Virginia and nasty Washington politics. It made me terribly sad to return home for a visit this past week to find such spiteful garbage splattered across the headlines of the hometown paper. What possible purpose can be served by smearing Sen. Jenkins’ personal financial burdens across your front page? Sen. Jenkins and his wife have been devoted members of the Tarboro community and have served faithfully in many capacities. If the purpose was to promote the newspaper, then I hardly think the extra dozen copies that may have been sold could have been worth the personal damage done to a local family. If the purpose was to serve the public and promote freedom of the press ... I don’t believe your “story” has done either.
