Tarboro Town Council Muhammad’s ‘legacy’ draws half-muted chuckle

Bert Spain

TARBORO — I read the article on Mr. Melvin Muhammad and couldn’t help but shake my head in disbelief with a half-muted chuckle.

Wait a minute, he went in as councilman to create controversy? Did I read that right? I did, because I read it several more times to be sure. Isn’t that an oxymoron? A councilman intends to create controversy, not work to dispel controversy and create harmony among fellow commissioners and the community?

Having a stimulating conversation to resolve a particular subject is one thing but to purposely create dissension, boy, do I have the wrong idea of how to communicate apparently. Either I have a backwards view of what a councilman does or Mr. Muhammad does.

Sure, if there are controversies they need to be resolved but holy smokes, you don’t go in with the intent of creating them, do you? I already knew that Mr. Muhammad thrived on the enjoyment of driving a wedge between accomplishments (if they weren’t in his favor) and harmonious relationships before he became councilman and sure enough that’s exactly what he did, so I suppose he fulfilled his goal. Unfortunately, at least in my mind, he has the wrong goals.

I would say his legacy as councilman has proven to be a very futile one to say the least.
