Photographer finds beauty in nature

Danny Lloyd finds birds fascinating. That’s why he takes photographs of them, especially eagles and hummingbirds.
Lloyd’s photos will on display in the Hobson Pittman Gallery at the Blount-Bridgers House beginning Sunday until Aug. 10.
Anna Hammond’s unique dolls also will be on exhibit. Hammond of Rocky Mount makes dolls out of threads and fibers, fabric and beads. Her finished work is always one-of-a-kind.
There will be a reception for Lloyd and Hammond from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
“I will take a landscape picture now and then,” said Lloyd, 59, of Oriental, “but I love wildlife in general and birds in particular.
“There are so many beautiful things in nature that people don’t see,” he said. “Some people can’t see the trees for the forest.”
Lloyd calls his work “Nature’s Art.”
Some of the photos of eagles will be of a pair he found nesting near the Tar River outside of Tarboro last year. A man had seen some of Lloyd’s photos and called to tell him about the nest in the top of a cypress tree.
“I remember watching and seeing a mature eagle and then two little fuzzy heads pop up,” Lloyd said.
“I must have gone back a dozen times,” he said. “Finally, in May, the chicks fledged.”
The nest was rare in that it was accessible by car. Most of the nests Lloyd finds require a boat to get close. He knows of a nest in Beaufort County, another in Pamlico County.
Two summers ago, he made trip after trip to Jordan Lake near Apex.
“The first time I went we counted more than 100 eagles in five hours,” Lloyd said. “I am sure we counted some more than once, but that was something. It got me going.”
He also saw herons and egrets.
“I have an 18-foot bass boat that is equipped for photography,” he said. “I have never wet a hook. I have tripod bolted down in the front.”
