Kathy Jones, Ccairman of the good citizenship program, explained some qualities of the fifth-grade winners are loyalty, punctuality, clean mind, service, honor, cooperation, unselfishness, kindness, individual responsibility, courage, leadership, honesty, good sportsmanship and patriotism.

Celia Baggett, the DAR chapter’s good citizens chairman, explained the good citizens program and scholarship contest. It is intended to reward and encourage outstanding qualities of good citizenship of high school seniors. They have demonstrated dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Students were required to submit a list of their activities and personal qualifications along with two letters of recommendation. The second requirement was to write an essay titled “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility to Preserve It.” It was written without assistance or reference material in a two-hour sitting under the supervision of a faculty member. Essays were judged by one retired teacher and one who is still actively teaching. The seniors at the school voted to choose three individuals. Finally, the entire faculty chose one for their school’s winner. All winners have received a DAR Good Citizen’s pin and will be awarded a DAR certificate and savings bond when they are recognized at the end of the year in their individual school assemblies.

Winners who attended the Silver Tea and were given gift certificates were: 1. Rocky Mount High School, Malcolm Armwood, son of Mary and Alvin Armwood. Malcolm recently wrote, directed and starred in that play at Rocky Mount High School; 2. Southern Nash High School, Daryl Emig III, son of Mary and Daryl Emig, IV; 3. SouthWest Edgecombe High School, Donna Lynn Harrell, daughter of Debra and Carl Harrell.
