G.W. Carver National Alumni Association


TARBORO — The National G.W. Carver Alumni Association 72nd Anniversary Reunion were held on the weekend of July 5-7.  A Breakfast/Business Meeting was held at the Golden Carroll Restaurant in Rocky Mount 9:30 a.m. Friday morning at.

George Barnes was elected National Vice President. Dr. Evelyn Johnson retired from the position. All other officers were re-elected.

An Old Fashion Prom was held on Friday evening July 5, at G.W. Carver School in Pinetops. It was an elegant affair and well attended. It was sponsored by the Class of 1966, chaired by Minnie Hill Moore. Everyone had an enjoyable evening with special entertainment by class members and DJ Baby Boy of WCPS Radio.

The S.A. Gilliam Scholarship Awards Banquet was held on Saturday, July 6, at the Doubletree Hotel in Rocky Mount. Banquet speaker was Mr. Kenneth Earl Wiggins, currently from Harrisburg, NC. He is a Pinetops native, graduated from Southwest Edgecombe High school in 1979 and from the University of NC at Chapel Hill in 1983 where he received a degree in Biology. He is COO and Co-Founder of Ken Cord Bio therapeutics based in Charlotte, NC.  He held the recipients attention as he spoke about the many challenges he faced and they too must face as well, as they enter college, and goes about achieving their dreams.

Fourth teen applicants received the S.A. Gilliam Scholarships in the amount of $1500 each and one applicant who received a $200 award, due to her tuition was paid in full. They all are very inspiring students who are seeking careers in a broad range of different fields. One Graphic Designer, two Nursing, one Business Technology, two Pharmacists, one Architectural Engineering, one Anesthesiologist, one Computer Engineering, one Veterinarian, two Psychologists,  one Physical Therapist, one Dental Hygienist, and one Electrical Engineering. We wish them all success and the G.W. Carver Alumni finds great pleasure thru your support in helping each of them reach their financial goals.

Distinguished entertainment was provided by Vocalist, Roenitia Stewart of

Raleigh, NC. Mae Ellard, National Secretary received the D.B. Gilliam Award. Bettie Jean Bynum Mitchell received the Eagle Award for her long service as website manager until retirement. Ann Edge accepted the Eagle Award posthumously for her late husband, Joseph Edge for being the longest serving National President. Mrs. Rachel Boddie Wiggins & Mrs. Annie Belle Battle was awarded  Eagle Certificates for being our Special Guest representing the First Graduating    Class in 1942 of G.W. Carver High School. Leah S. Vines, National President was awarded The Metro Washington Baltimore Chapter B.L. Staton Award for support of Education & the Alumni Chapter, The award was presented by Mary O. J. Staton, President of the Wash/Baltimore Chapter.

Classes in retrospect was called by Mae Ellard as classes from the first class of 1942 thru class of 1971 made their presentation to the SA Gilliam Scholarship Fund. Again the class of 1967 was the top contributor, a position they have held for several years in the class competition.

The alumni attended the Sunday 11 am Church Service on July 7th  at Harts Chapel Baptist Church on Noble Mill Pond Road, Rocky Mount, NC.
