Vidant Edgecombe Hospital receives award for preventable heart failure readmissions reduction

TARBORO — Vidant Edgecombe Hospital accepted an award this week from VHA Central Atlantic, Inc. for preventable heart failure readmissions reduction.

“Our success with reducing Heart Failure readmissions at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital is due to a well orchestrated effort among a group of caring inpatient and outpatient clinicians and administrators that truly care about the outcomes of our Heart Failure patients,” said Denise Poland-Torres, Physician Assistant.

Vidant Edgecombe, and other hospitals receiving the award, had a 20 percent or greater reduction in 30-day all-cause heart failure readmission rate or number of 30-day all-cause heart failure readmissions in July through December 2012 compared to the baseline period of October 2010 through March 2011.

VHA Central Atlantic recognizes 36 hospital systems for excellence in clinical quality and patient safety. Awardees are “leaders in patient care” across six states – North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland – and the District of Columbia.

“The awards provide well-deserved recognition to our region’s members for their superior clinical performance,” said David McDonald, area senior vice president and executive officer, VHA Central Atlantic. “Their achievements exemplify the dedication of their organizations to provide exemplary clinical care and a culture of continuous quality improvement. We congratulate their outstanding performance and celebrate their success in enhancing patient care.”

VHA Central Atlantic is a regional branch of VHA, Inc., a national network of not-for-profit healthcare organizations.
