Edgecombe Arts invites everyone to drop by the Blount-Bridgers House from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday for a reception honoring the African American Music Trail Traveling Photography Exhibit and the Summer Camp Student Art Exhibit. The house and gardens will be open to the public and light refreshments will be served. The African American Music Trail consists of a total of eight eastern North Carolina counties: Edgecombe, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Nash, Wayne, and Wilson. Working in conjunction with the Community Council for the Arts in Kinston and a number of statewide organizations, the North Carolina Arts Council developed the premise for the African American Music Trail. The Arts Council hopes to revive the passion of a rich music culture of gospel, blues, and an evolution of music that North Carolina should be proud to feature. North Carolina Department of Transportation funds will help support future interactive kiosks in the participating cities, maps, and a travel guidebook to assist visitors in finding local musicians, venues, and other resources. A website will be launched late in November.
The traveling photography exhibit is only a small part of the larger picture as the Arts Council will be working with the participating counties to develop ongoing programming that will place a spotlight on the rich music history and talent from our area. The photography from the exhibit is a mix of nostalgic photography from the 1960’s and current photographs of local music legends from artist, Cedric Chatterley. Funding for the exhibit was supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and also funded by a Creative Economies grant to the Community Council on the Arts from the Arts Council. Representing Edgecombe County in the exhibit is the late George Higgs, Milton A. Harrell, Janie Laws, Verdell Robinson. Also on exhibit is a Summer Camp Student Exhibit featuring a few of the pieces completed by young local artists as well as photographs of the campers hard at work.
