Car wreck clogs roadway, damages utility pole

TARBORO — A wreck Wednesday afternoon had traffic at the corner of Main Street and Howard Avenue blocked for approximately 45 minutes because of a two car wreck that damaged a utility pole and broke the light in it.

Around 5:15 p.m. Tarboro police received a call about the accident. When officers arrived they had to block traffic in the northbound lanes of Main Street and the westbound lanes of Howard Avenue after 53-year old Gwendolyn Teresa Howard ran a red light and struck the front driver's side of 61-year old Gloria Brown's Ford.

According to patrolman J.S. Anderson's report, Brown had a green light to travel north on Main Street when Howard ran the red light on Howard Avenue as she was traveling east.

The report stated Brown's vehicle was traveling an estimated 25 miles per hour, while Howard's vehicle was traveling at 35 miles per hour when the two collided. After the two vehicles collided, they traveled another estimated 40 plus feet before coming to rest on the curbing on Howard Avenue. The report said that Howard was traveling approximately 40 miles per hour right before the collision happened. The speed limit on Howard Avenue is posted at 35.

When Howard's white Toyota struck the front driver's side of Brown's vehicle, it caused Brown's vehicle to hit the side of Howard's vehicle again, sending her vehicle into a utility pole on the corner of the intersection. The air bags deployed in both vehicles.

Both vehicles had an estimated $10,000 damage and the utility pole and light had to be replaced, with damage estimated at $500 according to Anderson's report.

Howard was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle on a street or highway by entering an intersection while a stop light was emitting a steady red light for traffic in the defendants direction of travel.

Both drivers were transported to Vidant Edgecombe Hospital by EMS for precautionary reasons. They were treated and released.
