Moore wins American Legion Oratorical Contest

TARBORO — Edgecombe Early College student, Shakeal Moore, recently won the American Legion  Oratorical Contest at club level in Tarboro and district level in Wilson.  Prior to that, Moore had  won the Ebonette Club of Tarboro’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Contest. When asked  why he continues to compete in each contest, Moore responded “Each contest gives me a chance  to amplify my voice and learn from others.”

The American Legion “was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic  veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veteran’s  service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in  our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and  continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.”

The Oratorical Contest presents participants with an academic speaking challenge that  teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation's laws, the ability to think and  speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of  American citizenship.

Moore credits his teachers, James Guy, Jamie Hathaway, and Keith Webb for their  support and encouragement during each contest. “Sometimes I believe that I am the voice crying  out in the wilderness ,” Moore held,” Each contests helps me to roar and yell even louder for  betterment in every area of our communities. “
